Go For It

In 1955 chocolate sales were doing really well, and the opportunity for a workshop opened for the organization, so the decision to “go for it” was made. A section on the ground level of the Empress theatre became available to rent. Although the space was dark, dingy, and dreary, the price was right. At $75/month the new space was set to become the first workshop of the Medicine Hat Rehabilitation Society. To help run the workshop business, an advisory board was formed.

Workshop Welcomed

The workshop opened in October with 4 disabled persons running their own businesses. May Davidson (stenographer), Mrs. Fred Sturgess (dressmaking), Margaret Barnett (alterations), and Gary Hooper (television and radio repairs) were the first in the workshop. The workshop offered disabled persons the opportunity to run their own business under the guidance of a supervisor, which made it a provincial leader in aiding disabled persons.
